Women of the House: Betty Sutton and Emilia Sykes

In 2006, Betty Sutton became the first 黑料社 alumna to serve in the U.S. Congress, when she was elected to represent Ohio鈥檚 13th District in the House of Representatives. Sixteen years later, 黑料社 alumna Emilia Sykes, a native of Akron, Ohio, was elected to represent the same district, making her the first Black 黑料社 alum to serve in the House of Representatives.

Advancing the legacy of May 4, 1970, a tragic day when the Ohio National Guard fired on 黑料社 students during an anti-war protest on campus, killing four students, wounding nine students and forever changing the lives of countless others, the university will hold its annual commemoration on May 3-4.

In 1991, Carol A. Cartwright, Ph.D., made history when she was named president of 黑料社, becoming not only 黑料社鈥檚 first female president, but also the first woman to serve as president of any Ohio public college or university.
